Limescale and Limescale Filters in Water: A Comprehensive Report

Limescale, chemically known as calcium carbonate, is a natural component of water derived from minerals in the earth’s crust.

While limescale in drinking water is harmless to health and even provides valuable minerals like calcium and magnesium, it can cause significant issues in households and industrial facilities.

This report examines the effects of limescale in water, the functionality of limescale filters, their benefits, and their importance in everyday life.

1. What is Limescale and How Does It Form in Water?

Limescale forms when calcium and magnesium ions in water combine with carbonate. These minerals dissolve from rocks like limestone and dolomite and enter groundwater.

The concentration of these minerals determines water hardness, measured in German degrees of hardness (°dH):

  • Soft Water: < 8.4° dH
  • Medium Water: 8.4 – 14° dH
  • Hard Water: > 14° dH

In regions with hard water, such as Munich or Berlin, limescale issues are particularly pronounced. Water hardness can be checked with local water authorities or platforms like wasserhaerte.net.

2. Problems Caused by Limescale in Water

While limescale in drinking water is harmless, it causes several issues:

  • Deposits in Pipes and Appliances: Limescale builds up in water pipes, boilers, washing machines, and coffee makers, causing blockages and inefficient operation. This increases energy consumption and shortens appliance lifespans.
  • Clogged Showerheads and Fittings: Limescale deposits reduce water flow and pressure, affecting comfort.
  • Unattractive Stains: Limescale leaves white stains on dishes, glassware, tiles, and natural stone, requiring frequent cleaning or renovations.
  • Skin and Hair Issues: Hard water can dry out skin and make hair brittle, as it reduces the effectiveness of soaps and shampoos.
  • Taste Impairment: Limescale can negatively affect the taste of water, tea, or coffee.

3. Limescale Filters: Functionality and Technologies

Limescale filters are devices that remove limescale from water or minimize its effects. Various technologies exist:

  • Ion Exchange: Calcium and magnesium ions are replaced with sodium ions, reducing water hardness. This method is effective but requires regular maintenance and salt refills.
  • Reverse Osmosis: Water is filtered through a semi-permeable membrane that retains limescale and impurities. This technique is highly effective but expensive and water-intensive.
  • Chemical Neutralization: Some filters neutralize limescale through chemical reactions, reducing deposits without altering hardness.
  • Ceramic Granulate Filters: Filters like the riva limescale filter use a chemical-free ceramic granulate mixture that binds limescale and prevents deposits without completely removing minerals.

4. Benefits of Limescale Filters

Using limescale filters offers numerous advantages:

  • Extended Appliance Lifespan: Fewer limescale deposits extend the lifespan of pipes and appliances and reduce maintenance efforts.
  • Energy Savings: Limescale-free heating systems operate more efficiently, saving energy.
  • Improved Taste: The taste of drinking water and beverages is enhanced.
  • Gentler on Skin and Hair: Softer water is kinder to skin and hair and improves the effectiveness of care products.
  • Cleaner Surfaces: Less limescale reduces cleaning efforts for fittings and dishes.
  • Environmental Protection: Fewer cleaning agents and descalers benefit the environment.

5. Statistics and Data on Effectiveness

Studies show that limescale filters can significantly reduce water hardness:

  • Ion exchangers reduce hardness by up to 90%.
  • Reverse osmosis systems remove up to 99% of limescale.
  • Ceramic granulate filters, like the riva filter, reduce limescale deposits by up to 80% without completely removing minerals.

In a household with hard water (20° dH), a limescale filter can reduce hardness to soft water (< 8.4° dH), delivering the mentioned benefits.

6. Disadvantages and Limitations of Limescale Filters

Despite their benefits, limescale filters have limitations:

  • Costs: Purchase and installation can be expensive, especially for reverse osmosis systems.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cartridge replacement or salt refills, is often required.
  • Water Consumption: Reverse osmosis increases water consumption due to wastewater and operating costs.
  • Minerals: Some filters remove beneficial minerals, which can be a disadvantage in certain systems.

7. Conclusion

Limescale in water is a widespread issue that causes costs and inconveniences. Limescale filters offer an effective solution by reducing water hardness and preventing deposits.

Despite costs and maintenance requirements, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, especially in regions with hard water. Choosing the right filter depends on individual needs and water quality.
Investing in limescale filters is worthwhile to improve quality of life and achieve long-term savings.

Water Filters for Limescale – How to Remove Limescale from Water?

Limescale in water is a widespread problem in many households. It not only leads to unsightly deposits on fixtures, shower screens, and in appliances like kettles or washing machines, but it can also shorten the lifespan of household appliances, affect the taste of water, and even contribute to brittle hair or irritated skin.
Fortunately, there are effective solutions to reduce or remove limescale: water filters for limescale. Below, we present various methods, explain their functionalities, advantages, and disadvantages, and provide tips for choosing the right system. Based on well-founded information on this topic, we help you improve the water quality in your home.

Why Limescale in Water is a Problem

Limescale, also known as water hardness, is caused by dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. In regions with hard water (above 14 °dH), limescale deposits are particularly common. These can clog pipes, increase energy consumption in appliances, and make cleaning more difficult. A good filter solution not only protects against damage but also retains valuable minerals in drinking water where possible.

Different Methods for Removing Limescale from Water

There are several proven approaches to combat limescale. Below, the most common methods are described in detail: the chemical-free rivaALVA limescale filter, ion exchanger systems, jug or tabletop water filters, and reverse osmosis systems. Each method has specific strengths and limitations that should be weighed based on household needs.

Quick Overview: Comparison of Filter Solutions

For orientation, here is a tabular overview of the methods:

Method Functionality Advantages Disadvantages / Notes
rivaALVA Limescale Filter Chemical-free, based on biomineralization: Alters limescale structure through crystal formation, reducing adhesion Retains minerals, protects appliances, easy installation, dissolves old deposits Cartridge replacement every 6 months, effective up to 20 °dH
Ion Exchanger System Exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions Highly effective, protects appliances and pipes Expensive, removes minerals, increases sodium content, requires maintenance
Jug/Tabletop Filter Ion exchanger + activated carbon in cartridges, manual filling Affordable, simple, improves taste Only small quantities, no appliance protection, frequent cartridge replacement
Reverse Osmosis System Membrane filtration, removes all substances Completely removes limescale and contaminants Removes minerals, high consumption (water/electricity), expensive

1. Chemical-Free Limescale Filters like rivaALVA

This innovative method, inspired by natural processes in mussels and corals, alters the physical properties of limescale without removing it. The filter granulate forms microscopic crystals that bind to the limescale and reduce its adhesion. This results in fewer encrustations, and existing deposits may even dissolve.
Advantages:

  • Natural and eco-friendly: No chemicals, no electricity consumption.
  • Mineral retention: Calcium and magnesium remain in the water, preserving drinking quality.
  • Prevention and remediation: Protects appliances and dissolves old limescale in pipes.
  • Easy integration: Can be installed in showers, kitchens, or before appliances.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited to water hardness up to 20 °dH; effectiveness decreases with harder water.
  • Regular cartridge replacement: Recommended every 6 months, depending on water quality.

These filters are ideal for households seeking a sustainable, mineral-preserving solution.

2. Ion Exchanger Systems

Ion exchangers are classic softening systems that replace hardness-causing ions (calcium, magnesium) with sodium ions. The resin in the filter binds the ions and must be periodically regenerated with salt.
Advantages:

  • High effectiveness: Produces soft water and protects against limescale damage.
  • Long-lasting protection: Ideal for the entire household.

Disadvantages:

  • High costs: Purchase and installation (hundreds to thousands of euros) by professionals.
  • Mineral loss: Removes beneficial substances, increases sodium – problematic for certain diets or baby formula.
  • Maintenance-intensive: Regular salt refilling and care required.

This method is suitable for heavily limescale-affected regions where complete softening is prioritized.

3. Jug or Tabletop Water Filters

These portable filters use cartridges with ion exchangers and activated carbon to manually filter water. They are easy to use and suitable for daily tasks like brewing tea or coffee.
Advantages:

  • Affordable and flexible: No installation required, portable.
  • Taste improvement: Reduces limescale and impurities for better drinking water.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited capacity: Only for small quantities, no protection for fixed appliances like showers or dishwashers.
  • High follow-up costs: Cartridges need frequent replacement, risk of bacterial growth if neglected.

Perfect for beginners or supplementary use, but not a comprehensive solution.

4. Reverse Osmosis Systems

In reverse osmosis, water is forced through a membrane under pressure, allowing only water molecules to pass through. This removes limescale and nearly all other substances.
Advantages:

  • Comprehensive purification: Removes limescale, contaminants, and impurities.
  • Household-wide protection: Permanent installation possible.

Disadvantages:

  • Mineral loss: Produces demineralized water lacking beneficial substances.
  • Resource-intensive: High electricity and water consumption (produces wastewater).
  • Expensive: High purchase costs, market with overpriced offers (up to over €6,000).

Recommended for cases where maximum purity is required, but caution is advised regarding prices and advice.

Applications for Limescale Filters (e.g., rivaALVA)

Limescale filters can be used versatilely:

  • Shower: Directly at the fixture – simplifies cleaning and improves skin/hair feel.
  • With high-pressure housing in the kitchen (under-sink): Before the sink or dishwasher – reduces deposits and improves cleaning performance.
  • With high-pressure housing in other areas: Before washing machines or other appliances to extend their lifespan.

Combinations, e.g., with activated carbon filters, can offer additional benefits.

Installation and Maintenance

The installation of our SLIM housings is often straightforward and requires no special skills with a step-by-step guide. Maintenance mainly involves cartridge replacement every 4-6 months (per DIN 1988), depending on water hardness.

Conclusion: The Best Solution Against Hard Water

Ion exchangers and reverse osmosis systems offer strong descaling but are expensive and remove minerals. Jug filters are affordable but limited. Chemical-free options like rivaALVA offer a balanced approach: effective protection, mineral retention, and sustainability. Choose based on your water hardness (up to 20 °dH ideal for rivaALVA) and needs.

No, according to the riva filter material manufacturer, the DVGW fundamentally refuses to issue certifications for water filter systems with a filter fineness below 80 micrometers. riva water filter materials are well below 80 μ. Our fine-pored, efficient filter solutions start at 20 μ.
The following reasons are inexplicably cited:

  1. a) No corresponding test regulations exist.
  2. b) Drinking water from public water supplies does not require further treatment, as it is thoroughly and regularly tested by water supply companies and monitored by the health authorities as part of state health oversight.

Requests from riva, filter material manufacturers, and other water filter manufacturers are regularly rejected on this basis. This happens without any consideration of the documented evidence and certificates proving that activated carbon filters and membrane filters naturally remove substances such as:

  1. a) Substances that enter the water after leaving the waterworks – copper and lead from pipes and fittings, bacteria from leaks and stagnation, chlorine from disinfection measures.
  2. b) Substances currently not monitored by waterworks due to cost reasons, such as pharmaceutical residues, hormones, PFTs, and many others, … but CAUTION, these are demonstrably and increasingly present in water. Approximately 90% of waterworks cannot filter these substances at all.
  3. c) Substances causing taste and odor issues in water. These are only addressed by the requirement that water should be odorless and tasteless, but are not objectively verified within the “thorough testing by water supply companies” (see above) and are notoriously difficult to objectively determine.

Furthermore, the (private-law) DVGW’s claims that only devices and products with DVGW certification may be used are legally incorrect.
Conclusion:
For the reasons mentioned, we cannot provide DVGW certification, as the DVGW refuses to test and/or we receive only delayed responses to inquiries and/or these get lost due to lack of jurisdiction.
Quality Assurance and Certification:
riva and our selected filter material suppliers use only certified materials for filtration.
All materials also meet the requirements of food safety (LMBG, KTW guideline).

The cartridge housings of the rivaALVA series are made of sustainable, bio-based material and are thus theoretically biodegradable and compostable.
However, the filter materials inside the cartridge are problematic, as they have collected contaminants.
For this reason, a used filter cartridge should be disposed of in residual waste, where it is typically thermally disposed of (incineration).
riva filter solutions are tested and certified by various institutions. Upon request, we are happy to send you the individual certificates and reports.

Because sustainable systems and water filters are a matter of TRUST.

Like ecoturbino, riva works only with certified materials and thoroughly tests filter materials and filter performance.
Laboratory and test certificates underscore this, ensuring the efficiency and quality of riva water filter systems are always transparent.
As a system provider, we don’t just want to sell water filters; we want you to choose a shower system that truly fits your individual needs.
Our ecoturbino shower filter system solutions are modularly designed. They can be supplemented with additional filter units as needed, as the housings can be easily screwed together. Please contact us if needed.
Quality is close to our hearts, which is why ecoturbino and riva produce all their products in Germany.

The flow rate of the cartridges depends on the specific cartridge type.
Generally, however, it can be said that all cartridges, at a standard household water pressure of about 3 bar, have a flow rate between 8 – 11 l/min.
However, the shower system is limited to 6.5 liters per minute by the special ecoturbino system to extend the filter’s lifespan.
At an average household water pressure, the water pressure is reduced by about 0.3 bar, which is completely “neutralized” by the ecoturbino in terms of shower comfort.

The shower experience with only 6.5 l/min water consumption remains fully intact.

Even with a double filter, the water pressure is not further reduced.

Our riva water filters are suitable for both cold and warm water.
Generally, an ideal water temperature for filtration is considered to be a maximum of 55 degrees Celsius.
Most filters in the rivaALVA series can be used up to a maximum of 65°C.
For membrane filters, the following differences should be noted:

  • A hollow fiber membrane filter like riva Multi can briefly handle up to 65°C, while the rivaALVA-S Jova should not filter water warmer than 40 degrees Celsius. This depends entirely on the specific filter material used.
  • When using a shower filter, it’s ideal to set a temperature you would still shower with. A shower filter should never be used at full temperature for filling bathwater.
  • Staying at a maximum of about 55 degrees Celsius ensures the filter material is not damaged, and the water is generally more than body-warm.
If the cartridge is replaced approximately every 6 months as recommended per DIN 1988, there is no risk of bacterial growth, provided the filter is used regularly.

Usage rules for interruptions in water filter use

Simply let at least 3 liters of water run through before use.
After 6 months: Generally replace the filter after 6 months.
